Memorial Day
In 1945, the town of Bedford voted to establish a memorial for the young men of
Bedford who were serving in the war. Three years later, in 1948, the committee had
not found suitable land nor the money to pay for the memorial. Then, in the spring of 1955, construction began on a new school to reduce overcrowding. The school opened in September of 1955, ten years after the town had decided to pay tribute to our soldiers.
It was decided to name the school Memorial School as a tribute to all soldiers from Bedford.
Memorial Day is a holiday in which we remember those soldiers, men and women, who died in active military service. President Ronald Reagan is credited with reviving the practice of honoring Memorial Day and its meaning.
