New Movement Pathways in Memorial

Evidence is mounting that each person's capacity to master new and remember old information is improved by biological changes in the brain brought on by physical activity (John Ratey, MD). This has never been more true and necessary than in today’s educational setting. We have embraced programs and routines that allow our students to access movement breaks in and out of the classroom. Students can access our movement paths to get that needed movement break.  Movement paths are a tool created to encourage motor planning and to engage the brain body connection by moving in a scripted format to improve self regulation.  Academics and physical activity are complementary. As teachers and staff are encouraging play and movement breaks during the school day, the movement path is just one more tool for our students to access.  Creating a similar path at home can be done with floor tape or chalk.  Any and all movement throughout the school day will boost confidence and creativity.
